Without a doubt one of the best rock tribute acts currently doing the rounds is Tom Sawyer - a Rush tribute.

The band have the standard Rush lineup of Bass/Keys/Vocals, Guitar and Drums and play stuff from the full Rush back catalogue.

Obviously, only Geddy Lee can sing like Geddy Lee so you have to cut a little slack in this department but the musicianship is very high, particularly from the guitarist, Ian.

Unfortunately, Tom Sawyer aren't "doing the rounds" any more as they split up earlier this year and had to cancel a load of gigs.

The split seemed to have been caused by the bass player, Steve, not being able to meet the gigging commitments required.

Founder Ian Butters was originally looking for a replacement but has since announced that he's going to concentrate on recording his own material under the banner of the Tom Sawyer Project.

According to the TS website, Ian Butters is still looking to reform TS in the future.

There's also an example of some new material - sounds very Lifesony but with dreadful vocals - on the TS website.

It's actually quite a good example of Ian's guitar playing - but he should have made it an instrumental, at least until he found a vocalist!

Oh no, that's terrible news!

I saw one of the Tom Sawyer gigs at the Renfrew Ferry and it was fantastic.

I hope Ian reconsiders and gets a version of the band back together.

Hi everyone

For some reason I'm having trouble posting a reply here and this my 3rd attempt. Apologies if it's brief and to the point because of this.

Anyhow - Tom Sawyer is now reformed with 2 full time pro level players.

There was indeed commitment problems with my two most recent band mates which led to our untimely split but rest assured it was for the right reasons.

The new Tom Sawyer will be awesome!!!

Visit www.tomsawyer.org.uk for more details.

Cheers

Ian.

Ah haaa...

My post appeared! - I'm here! (where?, right there, ah right, are you sure? - yeah snap out of it you fool...arrhhh).

Following on from previous post....

It was a regrettable end to the last line-up of TS but inevitable given what the band set out to achieve.

All I can say is - if you think we managed to do a decent job last time then you'll love the new line-up!!!

All I really want to convey to people is that trib'ing Rush to any decent standard involves a lot of really hard work, time and (not least) money that not many can truly commit to. If you only rehearse once in a blue moon and gig every couple of month you're not going to be able to stay on top of quality control and that's why I decided I had to reform TS. I know we played well at The Ferry in March give or take but things went downhill there after at other gigs due to lack of input. The final straw was a disasterous gig in Cardiff culminating in shouted abuse from the audience and people walking out. If you're going to talk the talk (and charge the ticket prices) you've got to walk the walk!

The gigs we had in the pipeline were merely casualties of inevitably dented egos and I was fully prepared to play them out and was not the one that pulled the plug on pending gig commitments.

Apologies to everyone - The Ferry, its customers and folk in London/Dumfries.

The new TS line-up will be hitting Glasgow in the not too distant future.

Also.... I've taken on-board the vocalising comments on my new songs btw!!!

I thought it was quite good - for me! Tee hee!

But I would hasten to point out that the current track on the website is merely a pre-production mix - ie a sketch of an idea rather than any kind of final offering. It not even complete enough to be a demo as such. Its just there as a sniff of what my music is about generally.

You cruel cruel lot!

Thanks for listening!

I'll see you guys soon!!!!

Have a great Xmas and New Year!!!!

Cheers

Ian.

Which is why there are about 80 Pink Floyd tribute acts in the UK alone and only about 3 Rush tribute acts!

Seriously, though Ian, it's great news that you've got a new line-up sorted out.

Looking forward to it - let everyone know when and where!
