I remember it Kevin - it made a half-hearted attempt to promote some local bands back in the late 80's / early 90's. As usual in Lanarkshire it didn't really get the support from the locals.

Although, in defence of the "locals" there were never really any bands to attract them that they hadn't already seen and heard elsewhere.

I had the misfortune to see Comedy Of Errors there around 1990/91. The band had recently lost vocalist Joe Cairney to club covers act, Fire Brigade, and recruited the totally unsuitable Alice Cooper wannabee, John Cowden. With Cowden, who looked (and sounded) like something from a lower league glam-rock act, the band did not go down too well at all with the prog rockers.

In fact I'm sure that they didn't actually play much after that and dissapeared from the Scottish pub music scene within the next few months.

I saw them (COE) around that time as well and there's no doubt that Cowden was Jim Johnstone's biggest mistake.

The band went from having a respectable prog rock following to losing almost all their fans in a couple of months as they attempted a new heavy rock sound.

The band should have been aware that Chasar had previously tried the same thing, turning from their Rush type sound (as a three-piece) and recruiting Peter Scallan to try to be a melodic USA style rock band. Same result - didn't work and lost the majority of their fans!

I think Joe Cairney briefly re-appeared as the vocalist with Abel Ganz for a short while!

There's no doubt that Cowden destroyed any credibility that COE had and they just didn't work at all as a heavy rock band.
