The actual demolition (including asbestos removal) would take less than a day.

As other posters have said, there's obviously something else going on as it's certainly not a big project and the council could make use of that area if they wanted. Any objections would be ignored as usual if there was money to be made!

Anyway, there are plenty of other parks throughout Glasgow/Lanarkshire that could be used if someone was going to put on a free festival but it would really have to be central and have a strong line-up in order for people to make any effort to attend.

Glasgow crowds are notoriously fickle and won't hang about to watch wee local bands that they don't know.

Comments about putting it back on are a bit irrelevant though as no one will take on the job of renovating the old place.
Real shame that.

And I don't believe you still have a pic of Stewartie, George, Eddie and Tam.
Lol.
The bold Lyin Rampant eh . . . . . .

Here's a pic from back of the stage during the Blind Allez set in 1985.

Just stumbled upon this site. Great stuff, you can't beat a good wallow in nostalgia.

I used to love Kelvingrove and it's a real shame that it died.

I can't believe anybody's still got a picture of Stewartie, George, Eddie and Tam either! Although I've never seen that one before. Nice hat, Eddie.

I'd have though 96.3 Rock Radio would have attempted this before now?

Forum users might be interested to learn that there is now a dedicated website for the Kelvingrove Festival that is currently collating archive material and is looking for ANY photos, videos, press cuttings and posters etc for inclusion.

See:- http://www.kelvingrovefestival.co.uk

There is also a new MySpace page dedicated to the Kelvingrove Festival!

See:- http://www.myspace.com/kelvingrove

This Festival was probably the best ever platform for unsigned acts in Scotland and hopefully people will contribute material to enable the construction of a proper archive.

I feel honoured and slightly ashamed that I haven't kept much memorabillia of the Kelvingrove Festivals. I left Radio Clyde two years ago and I know there was some, but not a lot of archive material in their vaults. There were also the master tapes of all the recordings we made.

All I have are a couple of programmes and a lot of great memories. Somewhere out there there is a raw 35 mil film of one year. I commissioned it as part of Jammy Music with an idea that it might make a documentary about the festivals. Sad to say it was never completed. In fact I now have no idea where the raw film is as it never made it to Jammy Music.

I brought a video director friend, Matthew Howe, over from San Jose California a couple of times to watch the festivals and he shot some video at the time but its a long shot to see if he still has anything.

Good luck with the venture. If I can help in any way let me know.

Great - it's about time somebody got on to this project!

I'm sure this will be a popular site when it appears as there are very few folk from the "glory days" of Glasgow's music scene who don't have a Kelvingrove story.

Certainly there must be thousands of photographs from these gigs.

I don't know if they'd have the "vision" for it?

I think we all know that even Rock Radio can't push Logan much longer! :-)

I've been reflecting on some of the comments made in this thread.

The venue is still there and could easily be brought up to date. Just knock down the old bandstand and build a stage on the same area to the same dimensions. The sight lines and accoustics of the natural amphitheatre were tops. The noise was contained within the area.

When I started the Festival there were no regulations for outdoor events but over the years we developed in co-operation with the City our own. These ranged from security requirements through Health and Safety to Emergency Planning.

Glasgow crowds were not fickle. While each band had their own followings most folk just came along for a good free day. As it was a pre-condition that bands had to perform original material it meant that the songs would be unfamiliar to most of the audience so it was a great challenge to the musicians to sell themselves to a new crowd. For most participants it was the largest crowd the had played to at that point in their careers.

Initially the funding came from the obligation that commercial radio had back in the 70s to spend a percentage of their revenue on the employment of live musicians. Sad to say this has disappeared along with most of the localness of radio because of their corporate group centralised programming and profit mentality.

Fortunately at Radio Clyde while I was there when the obligation towards live music was removed the budget was switched over to Marketing to allow the event to continue. It was the state of the bandstand that finally killed off the event.

Kelvingrove Bandstand is a venue that awaits its rebirth.

I am somewhat distant from the music industry now though I still have a passion for rock music and found a great band in Thailand who are incredible at their interpretations of rock classics. . I liked them so much that I set up a website for them. You can check them out at www.climaxpattaya.com

Meantime, what don't all Glasgow based forum members ask their councillor to do something about the bandstand? You'll find them here http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/YourCounci ... uncillors/
